Meta ads for ecommerce brands in India: a beginner’s guide

Facebook and Instagram ads can bring sales from day one, or burn your budget fast. Here is how to set up tracking, structure campaigns, make creatives that sell and scale safely.

Quick answer
  • Set up tracking first: Meta Pixel plus the Conversions API, with purchase events tested.
  • Start simple: one sales campaign, broad targeting and several creative variations. Meta’s algorithm does most of the targeting today.
  • Creative is the biggest lever. Test hooks, formats and offers, not tiny audience tweaks.
  • Judge results on cost per purchase and return on ad spend after margins, not on likes or clicks.

1. Set up tracking before spending

Without accurate tracking, Meta cannot optimise and you cannot judge results.

  • Create a Business Portfolio (Business Manager), ad account and Meta Pixel
  • Install the Pixel on your store and add the Conversions API for more reliable server-side tracking
  • Verify your domain and check key events: view content, add to cart, initiate checkout, purchase
  • Test with the Meta Pixel Helper extension and Events Manager

2. Keep the campaign structure simple

For most new ecommerce brands, a simple setup works best:

  • One Sales campaign optimised for purchases
  • Broad targeting (country or city, age range) and let the algorithm find buyers; Meta’s Advantage+ options automate much of this
  • Three to six creatives per ad set to start
  • A separate retargeting setup only once you have enough traffic
Budget tipAvoid splitting a small budget across many ad sets. Each ad set needs enough conversions to learn.

3. Make creatives that sell

Creative now does most of the targeting work. Test different angles:

  • Hook in the first seconds: a problem, a surprising visual or a bold claim you can back up
  • Formats: Reels-style vertical video, UGC-style reviews, carousels and simple product images
  • Angles: benefits, before and after (where allowed), founder story, comparisons, offers
  • Captions on video: most people watch without sound

4. Match ads with the right offer and landing page

A great ad cannot fix a slow, confusing product page. Make sure the page loads fast on mobile, matches the ad’s promise and makes the offer clear. Prepaid incentives help reduce COD refusals; see our tips to reduce RTO.

5. Read the numbers correctly

MetricWhat it tells you
CTR (link click-through rate)Is the creative grabbing attention?
Cost per add to cartIs the product page persuading people?
Cost per purchase (CPA)What each sale costs you in ads
ROASRevenue per rupee of ad spend
Break-even ROASThe minimum ROAS at which you stop losing money after product, shipping and fees

Work out your break-even ROAS before launching. A ROAS that looks good can still lose money if your margins are thin or RTO is high.

6. Test, then scale carefully

  1. Give new ads a few days and enough spend before judging them.
  2. Pause clear losers and keep refreshing creatives as they fatigue.
  3. Increase budgets on winners gradually rather than in sudden large jumps.
  4. Add retargeting and lookalike audiences once you have enough data.

7. Follow ad policies

Meta reviews ads for policy compliance. Avoid exaggerated or unproven health and beauty claims, misleading before-and-after images, and personal attributes in copy (for example "Are you overweight?"). Disclose AI-generated realistic content where required.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on Meta ads to start?

Start with a test budget you can afford to learn with for a few weeks. The key is giving each ad set enough budget to get conversions, rather than spreading money thin.

Are Instagram ads and Facebook ads different?

Both run from Meta Ads Manager. By default your ads can appear across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network, and Meta places them where they perform best.

What is the Conversions API?

It sends purchase and other events from your website server to Meta, alongside the browser Pixel, which makes tracking more reliable.

Why are my ads getting clicks but no sales?

Check your product page, price, delivery time, reviews and checkout. Also confirm that purchase tracking works correctly.

Want ads that actually sell?

We run Meta and Google ads measured on orders and ROAS, not likes.
